Quilted Florals

IMG_0509 (2)

Quilting is not just found on classic Chanel handbags anymore. The trendy texture is on everything this fall, from leggings and skirts to leather jackets and cardigans. This quilted crop top initially caught my eye because of the gray floral pattern with a hint of pink, but the final selling point was the fun, feminine texture.

IMG_0510

I love the juxtaposition of a feminine item paired with something edgy, so I balanced out the girly top with a leather skirt and caged sandals. To accessorize, I added some simple studs and basic black purse.

Hot Pink and Happy

IMG_0666

A simple, hot pink piece is an easy way to brighten up any outfit. I love this chiffon tee because of its versatility it can be dressed up with a black skirt and heels or worn casually with denim and flats. For a laid back look, I paired it with my go-to jeans, patterned flats and a geometric statement necklace.

IMG_0665

Hot pink is a fun color to play with because it can be adapted to fit a variety of personal styles. Pairing this top with leather leggings and strappy stilettos creates a sleek, sexy look with some edge. On the other side of the spectrum, wearing this hue with a stylish skater skirt and delicate sandals yields a more feminine ensemble. No matter what your clothing personality is, there is always room for this bright color in your closet!

Links and Leather

outfit 2

One of my favorite finds at Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale is this mixed metal necklace. I’m a sucker for statement necklaces and loved the edgy, yet feminine look of this stand-out accessory. The pastel stones soften the heavy-metal look of the chain links, creating a modern necklace that can instantly glam up an outfit.

photo1(3)

I wanted the mixed-media necklace to be the focus of my ensemble, so I paired it with a simple white tee. Staying with the edgy look, I finished the outfit with a leather skirt and lace-up booties. It’s a great feeling when you piece together an outfit that makes you feel confident and that is exactly what this outfit did for me.

Closet Cleanse

closet 2

After checking out the new styles at the Nordstrom sale, I was inspired to clean out my closet to get ready for the new season. I have so many pieces that I never wear anymore, but have been holding on to just in case. Instead of keeping these mediocre items, I decided to give my closet (and mind) a nice cleanse. Hopefully these tips well help you create a clutter-free closet that portrays the best version of yourself :)

peridot 2

Unleash the real you. Your closet expresses who you are, so I want it to present who I am right now and who I dream of being. I feel like I have matured in the last year and I want my wardrobe to reflect that. It felt great to shed pieces that no longer fit with my inner self. Goodbye college party wardrobe!

Ask yourself the below questions about each garment and if they answer is “yes” to all four, then it’s a keeper!

  1. Do I love it?
  2. Does it look my age?
  3. Is it flattering?
  4. Is it the image I want to project – sophisticated, strong, sexy, etc.?

One issue I noticed was that I would hang on to pieces because it fit the dress code for work, but I didn’t actually like it anymore. I decided to get rid of these so that I wouldn’t be lazy and throw them on in the morning. This will force me to look my best every day.

peridot

Define your style – preppy, edgy, trendy, bohemian? Once you establish the look you are going for, it’s easy to toss pieces that don’t fit into your wardrobe anymore. Try looking at Pinterest for inspiration and make a list of the key pieces that will help you build your desired wardrobe. While looking at items you already own, ask yourself if it is in line with the style you are trying to achieve. If not, then it’s time for it to go.

peridot 3

Be honest with yourself. Do you really wear it or does it just hang in your closet day after day? If you haven’t worn a piece of clothing in more than a year, chances are you won’t miss it.

Another problem I have come across is that I have an item I like, but nothing else in my closet matches it. I have a pair of patterned, high-waisted shorts that I like the style of, but when I put them on they just never look right with any of my tops. I’d rather sell them and make money to buy something new instead of having them sit unworn in my closet.

Now that you’ve completed your closet purge, what should you do with the giveaway items? I’ve had good luck with Plato’s Closet and recently signed up for Poshmark, an app that allows you to share Instagram-style photos of the items and sell them to other users.

Summer Packing Essentials

Untitled #42

Summer is the perfect time to take a weekend road trip and explore local and regional gems, whether it’s a great restaurant or a scenic hiking trail. Living in Las Vegas, we have numerous destinations within a five-hour driving radius. To the west we have San Diego for a beach retreat while up north we can explore the forested hiking trails in Zion National Park. We want to take advantage of this convenient location and experience as many unique places as possible.

Packing for a weekend trip can be challenging if you haven’t planned out every activity and restaurant. The best way to be prepared for any occasion is to bring versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down and can be mixed and matched. These are a few of my packing essentials for a weekend getaway:

  • White v-neck t-shirt. I love a basic tee because it can easily be dressed up or down, creating a simple, sophisticated look. Plus, chances are it will match all of the bottoms you packed.
  • Gray tank. This is another piece that is versatile and can be interchanged with the v-neck. Pair it with shorts and sandals for an easy ensemble.
  • Simple, black dress. There’s a reason why every woman should own a LBD – they are elegant and create an instant outfit. For day, pair it with your shades and throw your hair in a top knot; for night, add a statement necklace and let your hair down in beachy waves.
  • Floral skirt. This floral, asymmetrical skirt can be worn for both daytime excursions and a night out on the town. It’s trendy and easily paired with both tops.
  • Denim shorts. An obvious favorite because they are comfy, casual and neutral. For an unexpected look, dress up the distressed denim and a basic tee with a colorful statement necklace.
  • Neutral tote. Since you’ll be living out of a suitcase, it’s ideal to have  a large tote that carries all of your essentials (sunglasses, sunscreen, wallet, camera, etc.). A neutral-colored bag that matches the other pieces you packed will make it easy to grab and go.
  • Classic sandals. Flat sandals that are comfortable to walk in are a must. For maximum packing efficiency, it helps if they match your casual outfits, but also look dressy enough for a nice restaurant.
  • Aviators. These stylish shades make any outfit look effortlessly put together. They will also come in handy if you are doing some outdoor sightseeing.
  • Statement necklace. This is the easiest way to fancy up a basic tee or dress. Add the stand-out accessory to your basic ensemble and you have an entirely new outfit!
  • Straw fedora. No time to wash your hair before your next activity? A stylish straw hat and side braid can fix that!

Get the Look: Lauren Conrad

Untitled #41
Lauren Conrad is my style icon and role model in life – I am inspired by everything she does, whether that’s starting her own clothing line or taking a beautiful Instagram photo. When it comes to fashion, she always looks chic and stylish. I recently saw this look in Darling Magazine and love how simple it is while also incorporating trendy elements, such as the asymmetrical skirt. It’s a great business casual outfit for summer. To get the look, start with a basic black tank top layered under a beige blazer. Pair with a white asymmetrical skirt or skort (yes, skorts are back!). I never would have thought about pairing the white and light beige hues, but it looks crisp and classy. Finish the look with some strappy black heels. When it comes to beauty, a berry-colored lip gloss will pop against the neutral tones of the ensemble. To complete the polished, yet casual look, pull hair back into a sleek ponytail.

Boyfriend Shorts Two Ways

Boyfriend Shorts

Summer has arrived and so have the triple digits in Las Vegas. Boyfriend shorts are great for the heat because they are cool and loose, but also look stylish. The tomboy look can either be embraced with a casual ensemble or dressed up with feminine details.

For a low-maintenance look, I like to pair the distressed denim with a basic v-neck tee, which allows the shorts to stand out as the statement piece. The neutral gladiator sandals and tribal print tote add trendy touches while also keeping with the laid-back vibe. Top off the look with a straw fedora, messy side braid and classic Ray-Bans.

To balance out the “boyfriend” style, add feminine touches that will tame the trend. A simple white tank with eyelet details softens the edgy shorts. Heart-shaped sunglasses, a cognac cross-body bag and an elegant watch with rose gold accents enhance the girly, sophisticated look. Don’t forget some chic shoes! I love these pointed-toe D’orsay flats with the colorblocked heel cap and snake-print toe.

Featured picks:

  1. Ted Baker flats from Zappos.com ($93)
  2. Rag & Bone boyfriend shorts ($235)
  3. MARC BY MARC JACOBS watch from Bloomingdales (175)
  4. Metal heart shades from Nasty Gal ($22)
  5. Tribal tote from Sole Society ($60)
  6. Sandals from ModCloth ($30)

Tuesday Trends: Spring Essentials

spring 2014
It’s officially spring! Time for florals, bright colors and distressed denim. The fun fashion trends this season allow for a lot of creativity and there are several versatile pieces that should be in every closet. These are some of my favorite pieces and spring wardrobe staples.

Spring Fashion Trend: D’Orsay Flats

flats 2 v2

Here comes the sun! With temperatures reaching 80 degrees in Vegas, it’s time to dive into spring fashion. D’Orsay flats are one of my favorite trends this season. These BC flats from Nordstrom add a fun pop of color to any outfit. They easily dress up distressed jeans and would compliment the popular boyfriend style since they add a sexy, feminine touch. I paired them with a simple, neutral-toned outfit so that they would be the focus of the ensemble. I’m also excited to wear them with my coral, Aztec-print skirt to create a fun, colorful look.

Red Carpet Trends at the Oscars

To me, the red carpet fashion is the highlight of the Oscars. I’m not a big movie person and probably haven’t seen any of the nominated films (although Frozen is at the top of my to-see list!), but I love checking out the latest trends that the celebrities are sporting. Many of the styles can be adapted to everyday life and the red carpet was a great preview to the upcoming spring styles. Below are some of my favorite trends that were spotted at the star-studded event.

Untitled #4

Statement necklaces  are very versatile because they can add extra sparkle to a gown or can be worn with a casual ensemble. Jennifer Lawrence’s statement necklace dangled low in the back, which was a fun, unique touch to her chic, red dress. My favorite way to wear this trend on a daily basis is with distressed jeans, a simple v-neck T-shirt, heels and a necklace that adds a pop of color.

Untitled #5

Neutral tones were popular on the red carpet, too. From Jessica Biel’s nude nails to Cate Blanchett’s embellished gown, this hue can be worn several ways. When it comes to beauty products, nude lipstick creates a natural, yet beautiful look especially when complimented with soft waves and minimal eye makeup. I also love the illusions that this color can create, such as with the straps on Charlize Theron’s sexy dress.

Untitled #6

Similar to the nude hues, pastels were another “do” on the red carpet. Lupita Nyong’o wore an icy, pale blue dress with a plunging neckline that is sure to be on the best dressed list. The feminine colors are fun for spring and work perfectly with the floral pieces that are also popular.

Untitled #7

Surprisingly, several stars were wearing black dresses, including Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts and Anna Kendrick. One of my favorite dresses of the night was Anna Kendrick’s floor-length gown with sheer panels and an open back. Julia Roberts’ sophisticated dress had a similar look, with a plunging neckline, covered up by sheer, black lace.

Amy Adams was a true style inspiration, too, saying that she wore what she wanted to wear and dressed for herself. When you wear what makes you feel pretty and confident it shows :)

Boutiqueaholics

dress

For boutique lovers like myself, Boutiqueaholics in Las Vegas has everything you love in one container. Literally. It’s in Container Park, which is a fun retail, dining and entertainment development in Downtown Las Vegas.

20140227-205027.jpg

Boutiqueaholics is a boutique within a boutique. Several fashion lines and stores from around the world sell their trendy pieces under one roof. Clothing from Lili Boutique, one of my favorite local shops, can also be found here. Other lines include Sugarhill from London, Growze from Los Angeles, LuxC Closet from Miami, Babel Fair from New York City and Hey Gorgeous from Orange County.

20140227-205059.jpg

Not only are the clothes adorable, but so is the decor! I love the simple, vintage style. Using the books about high-end designers to display jewelry is such a creative idea and adds a chic touch.

20140227-205128.jpg

Whether you are looking for a fancy frock to wear out on the town or a casual, oversized sweater, you can find it here. I love the jeweled neckline on this pale pink dress. It’s right on trend with the pastel color palette that is popular this spring.

20140227-205048.jpg

This lace top with the subtle, sweetheart detail is a fun, feminine piece from Sugarhill. The Eiffel Tower print tank is another piece from this London-based boutique. Doesn’t it just make you want to be a jetsetter and eat colorful macarons in France ?

20140227-213040.jpg

Floral is my favorite trend this season. The patterned sleeves take this cropped bomber jacket from being simple to making a fashion statement. It would look great paired with a basic white tank, distressed jeans and d’orsay flats or heels. These unique styles are definitely worth checking out next time you are in Las Vegas.

Tuesday Trends

tuesday trends 1
Spring has sprung! I’m loving the styles this season. It’s nice to live in a city where the sun already shines and winter clothes are packed away. Here is what I’m excited to shop for:
  1. Floral statement necklace. Add a pop of spring to your wardrobe with this flower power accessory from Wet Seal.
  2. Structured, studded tote. This Valentino tote, priced at $2,000, is just a little out of my price range… but studs are here to stay! Hopefully it’s not too hard to find a knockoff?
  3. Distressed boyfriend jeans. This casual, comfortable pair of 7 For All Mankind jeans can be dressed up or dressed down. Pair them with a feminine top, stylish accessories and sexy heels to balance out the tomboy denim.
  4. Hot pink crop top. From girly to edgy, this Topshop tank from Nordstrom is very versatile and can work with all personal styles. Plus, the cutouts in the back are so fun and unexpected!
  5. Strappy, black heels. With the open toe and look of a bootie, these Michael Kors heels are right on trend.

Tuesday Trends

Happy Trendy Tuesday! From fashion to fishtails, below are five of my favorite trends right now.tag

We all know how important first impressions are, so the wrapping on a gift can be just as memorable as the present itself. These printable gift tags from Anna and Blue Paperie definitely dress to impress. The basic brown paper with the pale pink ribbon and black and white string creates a fun look that is almost too cute to open!

fishtail

This is why I wish I had long, thick hair. The undone fishtail braid that transitions to a normal braid looks both effortless and stylish.

dresser

It’s not news that chevron is popular right now, but I love the rustic look of this DIY dresser from Shanelle Marie. I’ve been staining and painting a lot of our furniture lately and I want to give this design a try on my next piece. It’s modern, yet has the country charm I am hoping to fill my house with.

pink

I love this cozy, feminine outfit. The pastel pink contrasts with the studded details and metal accessories to create a girly, yet edgy look. The winter white jeans complete the sweet, “sugar plum fairy” ensemble.

antler

I’ve been loving antler accessories, whether it’s home decor or jewelry. This necklace from MADE in Jackson Hole, Wyo. would be a great everyday necklace because it would go with anything. They sell other unique, handmade items as well.

Brrr-gundy

20131206-143028.jpg20131206-143057.jpg

20131206-143106.jpg

I’m obsessed with everything burgundy or oxblood this season – especially my new skater skirt form an adorable boutique in Las Vegas. For a holiday gathering with my family in Seattle, I added seasonal layers to keep warm in the chilly winter weather. The faux fur scarf creates a luxe look and is so cozy! Complete the simple style with patterned tights and fringed booties for a trendier vibe.

Thanksgiving Outfits for Every Dress Code

Tomorrow is the big day! From fancy to festive and everything in between, these four outfits are perfect for a variety of Thanksgiving plans.

For a casual gathering at home with family and friends, cozy leggings (hello, elastic waistband!) paired with an oversized sweater and infinity scarf creates a stylish, yet laid-back look. The sequin elbow patches glam up this basic sweater and add a trendy touch.

Heading to a festive, fancy soirée? The gold embellishments amp up this little black dress. Show a little skin – but not too much. This tight, short dress is balanced with the long sleeves and high neckline, which creates a sophisticated style. Accessorize with dangly earrings and heeled booties or pumps for a glamorous look.

Friendsgiving calls for more of a funky, relaxed vibe. Layering a feminine lace dress with an edgy leather jacket definitely achieves that look. It’s all in the details – the studs on the jacket and turquoise ring bring this outfit together.

‘Tis the season for sparkles! Sequins aren’t just for New Year’s Eve. As LaurenConrad.com shows, a chunky, knit sweater can dress down a metallic skirt. Complete the look with tights and booties for an effortless ensemble.

I hope everyone has an amazing (and trendy) Thanksgiving! :)

Tuesday Trends: Thanksgiving Edition

Only two more days until Thanksgiving! Time to eat, drink and be merry! Check out my favorite turkey day trends for decorating, dressing and dining.

DIY banners are a fun decoration for any occasion, especially when made with pretty ribbons and beautiful calligraphy. Burlap banners, which have also been popular on Pinterest, add country charm and are a favorite of mine. This dessert table from Paddington Way, complete with a DIY pom pom garland and several tiered cake stands, is a simple, stylish way to serve sweet treats this Thanksgiving.  Hello, mini pumpkin pies!

Whether you are spending your turkey day at a fancy soirée or at home dining with your family, you can’t go wrong with a simple dress paired with a sparkly statement necklace. Give thanks this Thanksgiving with customized place mats. This simple DIY project doubles as decoration and a fun activity. What am I thankful for? My family, friends, health and job, just to name a few. Plus fashion, food, Pinterest… the list could go on and on.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Weekend Looks

Ah, the weekend! Time to take a break from the work clothes and show off your casual sense of style. On days off, I love taking advantage of being able to wear trends I wouldn’t sport at the office. Sometimes a girl just wants to wear a funky graphic tee and distressed boyfriend jeans. These outfits are proof that comfy and casual can also be chic.

Life Is Beautiful

20131026-224151.jpgAfter acting like birthdays are no big deal, my boyfriend surprised me with tickets to Life Is Beautiful. I had wanted to attend this two-day music festival since July when I learned Imagine Dragons was co-headlining. This inaugural art, food and music festival in downtown Las Vegas was a big deal around town. From the concerts to the culinary village, it was a fun-filled weekend. 20131026-224157.jpgSeveral blocks were closed and transformed into the festival grounds complete with multiple stages, two ferris wheels, food trucks, a beer garden, charity lane and culinary village.20131026-224203.jpgThe murals and art exhibits played a large part in establishing the atmosphere. At this booth, festival-goers were able to paint a brick, which was compiled into one large wall.20131026-224246.jpgThe “Suzie Selfie” was my favorite mural. 20131026-224210.jpgThe food was another festival highlight. Out of all the chefs making gourmet meals, one of my favorite dishes was the Lobster Mac & Cheese from Lobster Me, a lobster-themed food truck. It was amazing! I might have to try making it myself soon!20131026-224215.jpgThe pumpkin spiced gnocchi with truffled butter and sage sauce from Lavo was another favorite. Anything with truffle is amazing.  As a foodie, the culinary village was one of my favorite parts of the festival. Celebrity chefs with high-end Vegas restaurants had booths serving signature dishes and also performed cooking demonstrations.20131026-224239.jpg20131029-200503.jpgPark on Fremont served fried mac & cheese balls, which were delicious! 20131026-224224.jpgI loved checking out the festival fashion. Fringe was a must! Whether it’s on booties or T-shirts, it gives a fun, laid-back vibe especially when paired with colored denim and booties. I found this shirt for $9 at Nordstrom Rack. How could I pass up that great deal!?20131029-200438.jpgDay 2! I was dying in my jeans the first day since it was 85 degrees, so I learned to sport shorts the second day. It’s still hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that it can be almost 90 degrees in October. Guess we really aren’t in Washington anymore! Plus, comfortable tennis shoes were a must! We were on our feet and walking around all day.20131102-194445.jpgThe music was amazing. Even the bands I had never heard of were so good! Imagine Dragons (from Las Vegas!) was my favorite. The lineup also included The Killers, Kings of Leon, Beck, Passion Pit, Youngblood Hawke, Capital Cities, Vampire Weekend, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Janelle Monae, Allen Stone, The Joy Formidable and many more.20131102-194451.jpg

Fall Fashion Show with Lili Boutique

20131020-150830.jpgOne of my favorite work events to attend is Fabrik Fridays, a weekly fashion show at SHe by Morton’s. The runway winding through the dining room of this stylish steakhouse plays host to fashionable collections from local boutiques and designers.  Lili Boutique recently opened in Las Vegas and put on a great show! With gorgeous dresses, trendy accessories and fresh designs, Vegas fashionistas are in for a treat. 20131020-150835.jpgLeather is my favorite trend this fall. The mesh cutouts on these leggings make them extra edgy. Complete the look with a high-low graphic tank or t-shirt and some studded accessories. 20131020-150841.jpgSHe’s bringing sexy back. With black lace and an open back, this stunning dress is perfect for a date night or bachelorette party on the Strip!20131020-150849.jpgStatement necklaces can take a dress from simple to super-stylish in no time. Toss on a sparkly, Peter Pan-style necklace for instant fashion flare. Heeled booties will also take the look to new heights. 20131020-150854.jpgDon’t put your shorts away just yet! The blush and nude tones of this outfit make this summer style  autumn appropriate.20131020-150900.jpgChunky, tribal print sweaters are everywhere this season! With so many colors and patterns, it’s hard to decide on just one! They pair perfectly with dresses or leggings. 20131020-150907.jpgBlack and white is always chic. The sheer sleeves and plunging neckline is subtly sexy. A black and white mini skirt is very versatile and can be worn with black tights when temperatures start dropping.20131020-150924.jpgI think we can all agree that wearing white after Labor Day is a fashion faux pas of the past. This lovely lace dress looks stylish in any season.
