Closet Cleanse

closet 2

After checking out the new styles at the Nordstrom sale, I was inspired to clean out my closet to get ready for the new season. I have so many pieces that I never wear anymore, but have been holding on to just in case. Instead of keeping these mediocre items, I decided to give my closet (and mind) a nice cleanse. Hopefully these tips well help you create a clutter-free closet that portrays the best version of yourself :)

Unleash the real you. Your closet expresses who you are, so I want it to present who I am right now and who I dream of being. I feel like I have matured in the last year and I want my wardrobe to reflect that. It felt great to shed pieces that no longer fit with my inner self. Goodbye college party wardrobe!

Ask yourself the below questions about each garment and if they answer is “yes” to all four, then it’s a keeper!

  1. Do I love it?
  2. Does it look my age?
  3. Is it flattering?
  4. Is it the image I want to project – sophisticated, strong, sexy, etc.?

One issue I noticed was that I would hang on to pieces because it fit the dress code for work, but I didn’t actually like it anymore. I decided to get rid of these so that I wouldn’t be lazy and throw them on in the morning. This will force me to look my best every day.

Define your style – preppy, edgy, trendy, bohemian? Once you establish the look you are going for, it’s easy to toss pieces that don’t fit into your wardrobe anymore. Try looking at Pinterest for inspiration and make a list of the key pieces that will help you build your desired wardrobe. While looking at items you already own, ask yourself if it is in line with the style you are trying to achieve. If not, then it’s time for it to go.

Be honest with yourself. Do you really wear it or does it just hang in your closet day after day? If you haven’t worn a piece of clothing in more than a year, chances are you won’t miss it.

Another problem I have come across is that I have an item I like, but nothing else in my closet matches it. I have a pair of patterned, high-waisted shorts that I like the style of, but when I put them on they just never look right with any of my tops. I’d rather sell them and make money to buy something new instead of having them sit unworn in my closet.

Now that you’ve completed your closet purge, what should you do with the giveaway items? I’ve had good luck with Plato’s Closet and recently signed up for Poshmark, an app that allows you to share Instagram-style photos of the items and sell them to other users.

Weekend Looks

Ah, the weekend! Time to take a break from the work clothes and show off your casual sense of style. On days off, I love taking advantage of being able to wear trends I wouldn’t sport at the office. Sometimes a girl just wants to wear a funky graphic tee and distressed boyfriend jeans. These outfits are proof that comfy and casual can also be chic.

Give your hair a rest from heat and styling. A loose, messy bun is perfect for the weekend – stylish, simple and sophisticated.

Cozy up in an over-sized sweater paired with black skinny jeans or leggings. A faux-fur infinity scarf creates a glamorous look.

Fall and flannel go together like peanut butter and jelly. For a sophisticated style, choose a plaid pattern that is subtle and incorporates neutral colors, such as tans and blues. Create this weekend-chic ensemble with distressed denim, a leather jacket and a knit infinity scarf.

Graphic tees with distressed boyfriend jeans create a fun, laid-back vibe. The studded heels dress up the look, but fashion-forward flats would look great, too. The camo jacket and cross-body bag complete this trendy look.

Crazy for Chambray

I love the chambray style that has been popular this past year. Chambray shirts are so versatile because you can dress them up, dress them down and make them look girly or edgy. I’m so glad that sleeveless versions are easy to find this summer… and affordable! Target and H&M have some great options. Here are some of my favorite ways to style these trendy tops.

Make a statement. Spice up these simple, neutral tops with a statement necklace! It adds instant color and style. Another way to stand out is to pair it with bold bottoms, such as a patterned skirt, colorful jeans or floral shorts.
Howdy, y’all. I’m a country girl at heart, so my cowboy boots are a staple in my wardrobe. For a complete cowgirl look, I like to wear them with a chambray top, flowy skirt and girly accessories. Keeping it casual and feminine is the key to getting this style.
Girly girl. Paired with pastels or florals, chambray tops look soft and feminine. Add dainty accessories, but don’t overdo it. Top it off with soft waves and natural-looking makeup.
Edgy. Pile on the studs and layer a button-up chambray top over a graphic tank to get this look. Finish this fashionable ensemble with black skinny jeans and heeled booties.
Wrap it up. Even though it’s summer, a light, breezy scarf is a cute way to accessorize. A fedora and cross-body bag are the perfect addition for a day of strolling in the sun.
Fancy pants. Just because it looks like denim, doesn’t mean it has to be casual. Pair with a dressy skirt, heels and some classy accessories. Just the right attire for a night out on the town!

Vegas Fashion

What non-locals think I wear vs. what I actually wear…

Living in Las Vegas has drastically changed my style. Mostly because it isn’t appropriate to wear sweaters when it’s 115 degrees… So long Seattle wardrobe. Before I moved here, when I heard “Vegas,” the style that came to mind was tight dresses, short skirts, high heels and lots of sequins. However, I quickly realized that Vegas is much larger than just the strip. Obviously I knew people didn’t wear clubbing attire 24/7, but I didn’t realize how much the heat affects your clothing choices. I’ve always preferred boots and flats to flip flops, but pools and hot weather has changed my opinion. They are a necessity.
When it comes to clothing the looser, lighter and less (to some degree) the better! By less I mean that maxi skirts and jean jackets don’t work in this heat, but we’ll leave the skimpy clothing to the dancers on the Strip. Simple shorts, breezy tanks and flip flops are perfect for running errands and being out and about in the sunshine. Guess I need to do some shopping since my Washington wardrobe isn’t going to work. Darn… ;)

Christmas in July… AKA Nordstrom Sale

Yes, I am talking about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! I was born a Nordies girl. Every summer my mom would hire a babysitter on that first Friday of the sale and come back with matching leggings and turtlenecks for my younger sister and I (typical ’90s fashion… so stylish). Once I was old enough to go by myself I loved to hit up opening day. With the excitement of new clothes for a new season and crowds of shoppers that are equally as eager, it’s impossible not to get into the spirit of the sale.

This pair of Halogen heels is my prized possession this year. I love that they look like booties and can be dressed up or down. They are really comfortable, too! I broke them in while working a restaurant grand opening, which might not have been a bright idea. However, after being on my feet for 6 hours I was still able to stand and even wore them again the next day.

I paired the heels with cuffed skinny jeans and a peplum top for a casual, yet trendy look. Can’t forget the studded bracelet, too!

Top 10 Fall Trends

I know it is only July, but I get so excited for fall clothes when I know that the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is just around the corner! Early access shopping began today and from checking out the newest styles, here are my picks for the top 10 fall trends:

Studs. Studs are here to stay! They can be seen on everything from crossbody bags and boots to leggings and sweaters. Don’t put that tough-girl look away just yet!

Chambray. This is another trend that is not going anywhere. Chambray tops and shirt dresses are still popular for fall. They look great paired with some black pants or leggings and cognac-colored boots.

Leather. It’s everywhere: leggings, trim on tops, skirts, jackets, tops, peplum… you name it!

Graphic tees. For a cool, edgy look, toss on a tee that sports some text, an animal or geo print.

Acid wash. This style of skinny jeans and leggings is perfect for an edgy look, so it works well with the graphic tees mentioned above. Still not sure if I could pull off this look…

Lace-up boots. Short or tall; studded or buckled; edgy or girly. These boots come in all shapes and sizes! Steve Madden has some really cute styles!

Infinity scarves. There is no easier accessory than an infinity scarf. Just throw it on and you have a stand-out accessory that can really change an outfit.

Peplum. This figure-flattering style is popping up again this season. It can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the piece, so it can be worn for desk to date night without a problem!

Skinnies with heeled booties. I am so happy to see that skinny jeans are still in! I love pairing them with short, heeled booties and an over-sized sweater. It looks like colored denim — especially in fall hues, such as burgundy and grey — are still popular, too!

Distressed denim. These jeans are perfect for a casual look and often come in a boyfriend or skinny style. Pair them with converse and an oversized sweater for an everyday look or dress them up with heeled booties and a peplum top.

StylishGirl is my new favorite iPhone app! It allows you to have your wardrobe in the palm of your hand! You start by taking pictures of all the items in your closet and categorizing them. It takes a little while, but it’s nice to see everything you have! For example, I have some items that I always overlooked, but while taking the pictures I realized that it’s still really cute. You can also make notes and write details for each item (size, where it’s from, etc.).

My favorite feature is that you can put outfits together and save them. When I’m in a rush to get to work, but still want to look put-together, I can just pull up my list of saved outfits and throw it on without having to think about it.

This app also lets you pack your “suitcase” by adding single items or an entire outfit at once! I’m going to Mexico in a couple of weeks and want to start packing now, but I don’t want to have my actual suitcase sitting out until then. With this app I can see what I want to bring without having piles of clothes on my floor. It also helps me see what I’m missing. I’ve learned that I don’t have much of a warm-weather wardrobe since I’ve lived in Seattle my entire life. This will have to change!

I also love this app because when I am out shopping, I can see if I have anything that matches the item I’m thinking about buying. Also, I can see if I have anything similar to it that I forgot about.

If you’re a clothing addict like me, you will absolutely love this app!
